Verdant Isles European Tidal Energy
Developing European Tidal Energy Projects Through Irish Hub
Ireland’s Duggan Renewables Ltd. and America’s Verdant Power, Inc. have partnered to establish Verdant Isles Ltd. – a joint venture to develop tidal energy projects in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Verdant Power has teamed up with Duggan Renewables to develop a number of sites in Ireland and the UK, with Verdant Isles being created as a vehicle to develop tidal farms. Within the next six years, Verdant Isles aims to have 40 MW of tidal energy commissioned, with multiples of the same coming on stream in the following years. This would mean an investment of €100m, plus the potential to create up to 250 sustainable jobs.
Verdant Power is a leader in the Marine Hydrokinetic (MHK) industry. Through its initiatives worldwide, the company has developed leading capabilities in the areas of MHK device design, demonstration and operation, as well as resource assessment and environmental monitoring at MHK project sites. Verdant Power was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in New York, New York, USA.
Duggan Renewables was established by Duggan Brothers (Contractors) in response to the growing market in the renewable energy sector, both in Ireland and the UK. Further to extensive research into the available technologies, the company has concentrated its initial efforts on the Hydro & Biogas technology sectors, both of which are well established with proven track records. In order to bring these technologies to the UK and Irish market Duggan has formed strategic partnerships with leading European and U.S. technology providers. Duggan Brothers was founded in 1926 and is headquartered in Richmond, Templemore, Co Tipperary, Ireland and over the past twenty years has had a turnover of over € 1 billion.
Verdant Power’s Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) Project is located in the East Channel of the East River, which is a tidal strait connecting the Long Island Sound with the Atlantic Ocean in the New York Harbor. Since 2002, Verdant Power has conducted prototype and pre-commercial testing of its KHPS technology at the RITE Project, as well as groundbreaking environmental analysis of the system.
